Our Students' Education Week Display was Impressive!
As you may know, Education week this year focused on the environment and we were thrilled to have the chance to showcase our students’ environments – and their talents - to the general public.
Working out how to address such a broad issue via distance education was an interesting challenge. We wanted to help students look at their local area with fresh eyes and to think about how they really can make a difference to the environment around them. We also wanted to let members of the general public know what a diverse range of environments our students come from.
Here at the DESU we are nothing if not flexible, and so students were given a variety of different project options to choose from; those with internet access and digital cameras who could move around in their communities were asked to take pictures that showed environmental awareness. Another option involved looking on the internet to find photographs of healthy and neglected environments and pasting them under these two headings. In the third option, students were sent a range of images which they then had to sort and paste under these same headings.
Finally, some families came up with their own ideas about how to explore the theme and took some wonderful photos of their children enjoying their personal environments. The projects were all beautifully individual and really something to be proud of. We certainly are!
After the hard work was completed by our enthusiastic DESU students, our team of teachers bundled together the laminated student projects, loaded the display boards and 15 carefully disguised bricks to use as anchors into cars and headed for the shopping centre. Thanks to the generosity and support of St Ives Village shopping centre, at no cost, we were able to put together a fabulous display as you can see in the photograph below. (To see more photos from the display have a look in the Photos section of the website.)
The display looked fantastic and was admired by many, including the senior students from Sir Eric Woodward who came along to have a look.
We all agreed that it had been a very worthwhile endeavour and the only thing that was missing were some real-life DESU families to come along and see for themselves what wonderful work our students are capable of. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Your certificates of achievement are well-deserved!
